To upgrade its Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Community-based Enterprises (CBEs), the Department of Science and Technology-MIMAROPA (DOST-MIMAROPA) through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and Grants-in Aid Program funded over PhP 45 million worth of projects in the MIMAROPA Region in 2018.

Through SETUP, a total of PhP30, 206, 525 was provided to 45 MSMEs from the five islandprovinces of the region.  These MSMEs come from different priority sectors such as but not limited to processed food; furniture; gifts, decors, and handicrafts; metals and engineering; information and communication technology; agriculture; health and wellness, and aquaculture.

SETUP is the flagship program of DOST Regional Offices’ that helps MSMEs boost their productivity and competitiveness by providing various technological innovations in the form of up-to date equipment, technology needs assessment, technology trainings, technical productivity consultancies, laboratory testing and calibration services, among others. Through this program, MSMEs are able to streamline and improve business operations and upgrade the quality of their products and services to conform to local and international standards.

Among the MSMEs who availed of DOST’s assistance in 2018 is Hatulan Engineering Works and Machine Shop, one of the sought-after providers of engine reconditioning services in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. Through SETUP, the firm was able to acquire a calibration test machine and crankshaft grinding machine which enabled the firm to expand their services and create additional jobs to 30 individuals.

“Ako’y lubos na nagpapasalamat sa DOST. Sa tulong ng SETUP nakita ko yung improvement sa aking operasyon, nadagdagan yung kita, at marami pa akong natulungang tao” said Hatulan Engineering Works and Machine Shop owner.

In 2018, MSMEs through DOST-SETUP were able to create 231 jobs for their communities, with an average increase of 16.18% in productivity, and generated more than PhP 678 million in gross sales.

Aside from MSMEs, DOST-MIMAROPA also puts premium on nurturing CBEs through provision of appropriate technologies and capability building programs for community members. A total of PhP14, 915, 944.69 were granted to 24 CBEs located across the region to help them strengthen their community enterprise and catalyze the creation of decent work in their own communities.

Tangguya Fisherfolks, a community venture of local seaweed farmers in Looc, Romblon, is among the CBE- beneficiaries of DOST-MIMAROPA. To increase their production volume and produce superior quality seaweeds with lesser impurities, DOST-MIMAROPA granted them with a Farmerfriendly Solar-powered Floating Seaweed Dryer. The greenhouse/UV-treated sheet covered facility can be towed directly near the farmers production area and can dry two (2) tons of seaweeds at once.

“Ang binigay ng DOST na Solar Dryer ay malaking bagay iyon sa amin dahil kahit tag-ulan ay di masisira ang aming seaweeds…Nadagdagan din po ang kita namin sa seaweeds dahil dati 38 pesos ngayon ay 50 pesos na.  Malakas na dahil kahit tag-ulan nakakapagtanim kami dahil may dryer na kami na malaking bagay para sa aming asosasyon” said the president of Tangguya Fisher Folks.
